The TDC Group of Companies held its forty-eight (48) Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 16th November 2021, to report on the company’s performance for the period February 1st, 2020, to January 31st, 2021.

Presiding over the meeting, Mr. Earle Kelly, Chairman/CEO welcomed shareholders both virtually and in person to hear firsthand of the activities undertaken by the Group, against the backdrop of the COVID19 pandemic, which is still being experienced globally.

The Board of Directors reported, “the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March 2020 placed severe constraints on economic activities in the Federation. The TDC Group rapidly responded to the crisis by establishing a cross-functional COVID-19 Taskforce and have been exemplary in swiftly implementing strict health and safety protocols, by pivoting to embrace remote working by staff and adopting new technologies to enhance both the customer and the employee experiences.”

Addressing business performance, the Executives also noted, “changing consumer behaviours, adverse market conditions, and income losses among our customers put pressure sales in certain product lines and service areas, especially the tourism and hospitality operations. The trading and financial services companies feared better and returned commendable results.”

The Group generated Profit Before Income Tax from Continuing Operations of $11,225,417 and Profit After Income Tax of $8,007,277 compared to Loss of $2,218,547 and $4,450,896, respectively in the prior year. As a result of the year’s financial performance, the company paid shareholders a dividend of six and a half (6.5) cents per share, amounting to $3,380,000.

In speaking about the future, the company’s real estate and construction project will continue at Dewars on St. Kitts and the land exchange of 40,215 sq. ft. with a building at Budgeon Estate, Nevis, for two (2) acres at Farms Estate, earmarked for middle income housing.

“Our signature initiative has been the recent launch of our online shopping website: shoptdcgroup.com. This is expected to be a gamechanger for the TDC Group. While we pursue technology-enabled initiatives to engage our stakeholders, personal interactions and relationships remain as valuable as the utility of the tools that we make available.”

The Group’s good corporate governance agenda is focused on the delivery of a strategic plan. This companywide project includes a transformation process, which began in early 2020, to ramp up Human Resource development and engagement, IT initiatives using emerging technological trends, and Data Analytics.

At the close of the meeting, the Executive recorded its profound appreciation to its dedicated and committed staff who contributed significantly to ensuring that the Group has survived the vagaries of the pandemic.

“We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the entire team of the TDC Group of Companies. Our ability to operate safely and seamlessly throughout the pandemic-induced disruptions, restrictions and lockdowns is a test of our resolve and strength as a Group. It also testifies to our collective efforts, proactive leadership and genuine care for our employees and customers, to whom we are most grateful and appreciative. We must, and we will continue to work together for the benefit of all our shareholders and other stakeholders in keeping with our motto: Together We Succeed.”

The Corporate event was held at the Caribbean Credit Corporation Union Headquarters at Fortlands in Basseterre.

As part of its COVID19 response agenda, the executive and management team of the TDC Group of Companies has taken another proactive step towards educating its staff about the COVID19 vaccination programme presently ongoing in the Federation.

On Thursday 1st April 2021, by invitation, Mrs Latoya Matthew-Duncan, Nutrition Surveillance Coordinator, in the Health Promotion Unit of Ministry of Health, made an informative presentation to a wide cross section of the staff at the TDC Training Room on Fort Street in Basseterre.

Immediately following the well-received session, a Covid-19 Vaccination Clinic led by Nurse Williams-Campbell from the Community Health Services Unit and her team, Nurses Warner, Bussue, and Hodge administered the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

The first dose was administered to Mr. Earle Kelly, Group Chairman, followed by senior managers and other staff who willingly volunteered to receive their jab to protect themselves from contracting the deadly disease.

According to Mr. Kelly, “the COVID-19 vaccination program, like all similar programs in the past is very important to ensure the protection and long-term health and well-being of our staff, customers, and by extension their families.”

He further added, “We have strongly encouraged all our staff to take full advantage of the opportunity to attend today’s session. TDC continues to play our part in achieving the seventy percent (70%) target, in the short term, to return to normalcy and re-open the economy fully.”

The staff in attendance praised the timely initiative and many are eagerly looking forward to receiving their second dose in the coming weeks.

A similar session is already being organized for the staff on Nevis in partnership with the Health Promotion Unit (HPU).

Basseterre, St Kitts: Sagicor celebrated its coveted milestone of 160 years of business operation in St Kitts and Nevis, and the 12th anniversary of its Strategic Alliance as an Agency with Federation business leader, St. Kitts-Nevis Trading and Development Company Ltd (TDC) on Tuesday 9th March.

It was a day of high spirits and true camaraderie at the well decorated office of the Agency, and in the afternoon, the entire team stopped for a moment of celebration, punctuated with cake cutting, toasts to the occasion and short speeches by Principal Representative Nicolas Menon, Marlene Chin, Assistant Vice-President, Marketing and Donald Austin, Chief Executive Officer, Sagicor Life (Eastern Caribbean) Inc (SLECI).

The team of 19 Sales Representatives, 13 Administrative team members and two Sales Associates is currently led in St Kitts and Nevis by Denrick Connor, Agency Manager and Cleone Moore, Administrative Manager. The Strategic Alliance with TDC is strong with Nicolas Menon as Principal Representative. The team is supported by Sagicor’s relevant departments in the Eastern Caribbean and Barbados. This support structure has ensured that the Agency has become the Insurance Company with the leading market share as it relates to Life Insurance business within the Federation.

Donald Austin, Chief Executive Officer for SLECI, called into the celebration via Zoom and said, “I am delighted that I am able to join you via Zoom for this special celebration this afternoon. It is a testimony to how technologically driven we have become within this company. We continue to be thankful and grateful for those of your countrymen who have placed their confidence and their finances in our hands from 1861 and to those who continue to do so to this day.”

Austin continued, “Currently we are experiencing one of our most successful periods with Nicolas Menon as Principal Representative. Under his astute stewardship, this Agency has been recognized as the leading Business Unit across the entire Eastern Caribbean Region on two occasions – in 2016 and again in 2018. I have no doubt you can do it again. I am especially grateful to you for your commitment to Sagicor’s continued success during the past years and as we move forward into the future. This hasn’t been an easy time. While your country has benefitted from strict pandemic containment measures having been “locked down” only for an initial period from March to May in 2020, it has certainly not been business as usual.”

Mr. Menon, who was also present for the celebration, contributed high praise for the team, saying, “It’s has been an absolute pleasure to work with this team for the past 12 years in a spirit of excellence, camaraderie and competition. While TDC’s partnership with Sagicor started back in 1988 to 1992 initially, this past 12 years has been noteworthy as we have seen significant Agency growth from 2009 to 2021. We have become well known as a great Corporate Citizen in St Kitts and Nevis giving back to the local community by contributing to education, youth development, and sports via significant sponsorships and donations. Most recently, we provided monetary contributions to our Health Care and Frontline Heroes to ensure that they are protected as we battle this deadly pandemic. I look forward to working with this team as we continue to raise the bar of insurance sales, not only in in St Kitts and Nevis, but also across the Caribbean.”

Sagicor’s business in St Kitts and Nevis is administered by TDC which owns the Agency. However, the Agency is part of the Sagicor family via Sagicor Life (Eastern Caribbean) Inc (SLECI) which is headquartered in St Lucia. On January 1st, 1861, Sagicor opened for business in St Kitts and Nevis, the fourth country expanded into following the launch of the Barbados Mutual Life Assurance Society in 1840 in Barbados.

EPIC TIMES: The Sagicor team shares a winning moment at Sagicor’s Eastern Caribbean Annual Awards ceremony in 2019 in Antigua and Barbuda, where they were adjudged the leading business unit for 2018 across the EC markets.

Amid increasing cases of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) and its impact, the TDC Group of Companies has taken swift action to further discuss and address the illness in the workplace.

The executive directors and management team participated in an informational presentation about the epidemic, on Tuesday 3rd March 2020, which was facilitated by Dr. Hazel Laws, the Chief Medical Officer and Mr. Abdias Samuel, National Emergency and Disaster Management Agency (NEMA) Coordinator, who spoke extensively on the matter, providing accurate information, as well as, practical advice on how to deal with the infection.

The open forum included a question and answer session, where the leadership gained firsthand knowledge from the ‘experts’ who shared their concerns following reports that the virus had now reached the shores of neighbouring islands in the Caribbean region.

Immediately following the activity, a company wide plan is now in place to educate all staff, offering simple and useful guidelines on how to better safeguard themselves.

The approach forms part of an ongoing in-house human resource and health programme designed to equip employees with the understanding and skills that promote general well being and productivity.
